What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States and Canada, and increasingly in Europe and Asia.

The test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of learning. Unlike English proficiency tests (IELTS/PTE), the GRE tests your academic reasoning. A high GRE score not only secures admission but is often the key to unlocking massive scholarships, research assistantships (RA), and teaching assistantships (TA).

Test Format in Detail

The GRE General Test was recently shortened to just under 2 hours. It consists of three main measures.

Analytical Writing

Analyze an Issue task where you articulate and support complex ideas, construct arguments, and sustain a focused discussion.

Verbal Reasoning

Reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. Tests your ability to analyze text and synthesize information.

Quantitative Reasoning

Basic mathematical skills, understanding of elementary mathematical concepts (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis).

Score Scale & Percentiles

The GRE provides three separate scores for each measure. There is no "total" combined score reported officially.

Frequently Asked Questions

The GRE is adaptive by section. This means your performance on the first Verbal or Quant section determines the difficulty of your second Verbal or Quant section. A harder second section allows you to achieve a higher maximum score.

You are not allowed to bring your own calculator. However, an on-screen basic calculator is provided during the Quantitative Reasoning sections.

GRE scores are valid for 5 years after your test date. This makes it a great idea to take the test while you are still in university or shortly after graduating!

Yes. The GRE tests academic capability, whereas IELTS/TOEFL/PTE tests basic English proficiency. International students usually need to submit both for US university admissions.
